About Horizon Mission Africa- HMA
Our Story
Horizon Mission Africa (HMA) began with a vision to create lasting change in African communities beginning with Kenya, were are addressing the challenges that prevent children and families from reaching their full potential.
Our journey started through the Baboon Project Kenya, an environmental initiative focused on restoring nature and creating healthier communities. Through this project, we partnered with corporations, schools, and community stakeholders to plant thousands of trees in public schools across Kenya. These tree-planting activities helped promote environmental conservation, improve school environments, and inspire students to become stewards of their communities.
During our visits to public schools, we discovered that many children were facing challenges beyond the environment. We witnessed students attending school hungry, struggling to concentrate in class, and learning in conditions affected by inadequate hygiene facilities and limited kitchen resources.
These experiences inspired the evolution of our work from environmental conservation into a broader humanitarian mission focused on child nutrition, hygiene, and education support.
Today, Horizon Mission Africa (HMA) continues the spirit of the Baboon Project Kenya by investing in solutions that create healthier, more supportive learning environments for children.
Who We Are
Horizon Mission Africa (HMA) is a Washington State registered nonprofit charity and a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children and underserved communities in Africa with an initial focus on Kenya through sustainable, community-centered programs.
Our mission is to support children by addressing critical needs that affect their ability to learn, grow, and thrive.
Our programs focus on:
School Feeding Programs
We provide nutritious meals to children who experience food insecurity, helping improve school attendance, concentration, and learning outcomes.
Hygiene and Health Education
We promote good hygiene practices and support access to essential hygiene resources to improve children's health and dignity.
School Kitchen Improvement
We work with schools to improve kitchen facilities so meals can be prepared in safer, cleaner, and more sustainable environments.
Environmental Sustainability
Building on the success of the Baboon Project Kenya, we continue to promote environmental awareness and community participation through sustainable initiatives.
International Volunteer Programs
We welcome volunteers from around the world to join our community-led programs in Kenya. Whether you're taking a gap year, seeking an internship, part of a university, church, or corporate team, or simply looking to give back, HMA offers meaningful opportunities to make a real difference while experiencing the rich culture and natural beauty of Kenya
Ongoing Pilot Project: Feeding Christian Family School
Horizon Mission Africa (HMA) is currently implementing a pilot school feeding program at Christian Family School, located in Korogocho, one of Nairobi's largest informal settlements (slums). The program was launched to address the devastating impact of childhood hunger on education and child development.
Today, HMA provides nutritious daily meals to 50 of the school's most vulnerable children, primarily those under the age of six. These young learners are at a critical stage of physical and cognitive development, and a reliable meal helps them stay healthy, concentrate in class, and participate fully in their education.
Despite the success of the pilot, the need remains urgent. Christian Family School has 200 students, meaning 150 children still go without a daily meal, often watching their classmates eat while they remain hungry. This heartbreaking reality highlights the importance of expanding the program.
Our goal is to extend the feeding program to all 200 students at Christian Family School and, ultimately, replicate this model in other underserved schools across Kenya. By providing nutritious meals, HMA is helping children stay in school, improve their academic performance, and build a brighter future.
Together with our partners and supporters, we are working toward a future where no child goes hungry and every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
